Bro J and TT arrived on Friday and we headed to La Choza without reservations. When we learned of the one hour wait, we got back in the car and headed for Café Castro. Hmmmmm, closed since last year, so Yelp helped us find Los Amigos, a little off the path beaten by the tourists. It is well rated without having 200 reviews which I always find promising. From the outside, it is deceiving. It is not all lit up and is not on a main street where a lot of people would drive by and just say, "Hey, there is a place, let's try it". Yet they were full with a 15 minute wait, which tells me they have a loyal local clientele. The salsa would not be a reason to go here, it is pretty much sweet, tomato puree, but then I never go somewhere for chips and salsa, so that was a throwaway. On the other hand, Bro J's carne adovada was remarkable, nearly the best of the trip so far out of 3-4 places. This is about the richest carne adovada can be without being too much so. Absolutely delicious with tender, moist well cooked pork. This put Maria's in perspective. Get your red chile fix here. I ordered a big bowl of pork and green chile stew. It is a brothy style, with largish chunks of pork and potato. It did not have a ton of green chile, but it was really good, a homemade style. I dressed it with a squeeze of lime and a dash of salt and it was perfect. TT had her usual chilles rellenos. The red chile she had on top that was extremely rich, like the adobo on the carne. Bro J's side of posole stayed with the rich red theme. This is not soup. It had large chunks of very good pork and not so much corn. The style is redder, richer and thicker than typical. Very good. On the slight downside, the frijoles are pintos, served whole (which is good) but I thought they needed a little salt and somehow they were a little sweet. The rice was the plastic pellet kind, like Maria's and pretty tasteless. So far we are 0 for 3 on rice this trip. In summary, this is a great, home style place. You will enjoy excellent carne adovada or pork and green chile stew. Our service was excellent and the prices are reasonable. You can expect to wait a little but it is worth it.

We arrived at Los Amigos around 4:30 PM. We were seated immediately and drinks ordered. They were promptly brought to us. It looked as though this was a shift change and 20 minutes passed before someone came to take our order. Our order of enchiladas and carne ado ads came promptly. The food was warm and flavorful. The beams were firm but not hard. All was scrumptious...well worth waiting for. We took a piece of their four layer carrot cake home for dessert. The piece of cake was huge - sweet, moist and not buried in frosting. Yum!

Love this place! We eat here often as its close to our home. Servers are always really nice and accommodating and their food is really good! Best steak and enchilada plate in town hands down. Recently, we ordered a slice of carrot cake to go and the slice was enormous - like it could feed 3 people enormous. And it was super moist and delicious. Funky little place, but reasonably priced with some delicious food.

There are Mexican restaurants and then there are Mexican restaurants, los Amigos is definitely at the top of any list! We arrived in Santa Fe in time for dinner, road buzzed and hungry after the long miles that day. We were greeted with smiles and seated quickly. Our waitress was quick with our water and cerveza order and took our dinner order. The food arrived quickly and was steaming hot. It was quickly apparent that lots of the ingredients were fresh and locally grown. The flavor was fantastic and bright. The waitress came by several times to fill our drinks and check on how we were doing. Let's talk about the sopaipa, it was great! Great in flavor, freshness, and size! Served still steaming from the fryer it socks up that honey goodness. Be good to yourself, stop in and have a great meal!

Our 4th visit to Los Amigos. This time I had the pork Carne Adovada cooked in their red sauce. It was smokin' hot!! The flavor was excellent as well. The pork was mostly tender though a few pieces were a little tough. Warning: do not get this platter unless you can handle really hot food! It was served with Spanish rice and pinto beans, both quite good. I also had the lime margarita on the rocks - unfortunately it was not mixed properly. It tasted more like just Triple Sec with only minimal tequila. Avoid the margarita.

Very good food. I ordered the beef sopapilla in red chile sauce. My wife had the Carne avivado. My sopapilla was served hot and was very tasty. The rice and beans were on point. The salsa they served with the chips was excellent. Speedy service and cheap. Watch out, it is a bit spicy. My wife had some trouble with the heat.

Good food and nice homey atmosphere! They have a sizable menu for the whole family, and prices won't break the bank! Service is quick and the waitstaff is friendly. My visits here have always been positive!

We were seated quickly and almost immediately were asked for our drink order (yay! I've been driving since 8am. A drink sounded great). I asked the waitress if the margaritas were gluten free and she gave me an awful look, said I don't know, I don't drink. I asked if she would check with the bartender and she went away. Apparently she handed us off to another waitress who asked if we were ready to order. When I said "not yet for food" she hurried off without a chance for me to ask her about a drink. When she finally returned, I asked her the same question and she also couldn't answer. No one could tell me what was in their drinks, so I had to stick with water. :( She came back shortly to take our food order and was generally short and rushed. When I tried to ask questions (Im intolerant to both gluten & dairy) my options were limited so I ordered chicken tacos. Our entire order came out in less than 5 minutes. My daughters sausage patty (Bart for dinner) was overlooked to hockey puck status. My son loved his smiley face pancake. My husband enjoyed his stuff soppapilla. My 3 tacos were ok but very plain since I couldn't have the dairy toppings. The chicken ended up being very dry. She was back out quickly with our check. I truly felt rushed the whole time like they wanted our table for someone else. I saw them rushing other guests the same way. Some may appreciate the speedy service but I really don't like being rushed during my meal and the food came out too fast to have been cooked fresh. This is NOT the "fabulous Santa Fe food" i was promised. I will not be returning.

I love coming here. Free chips and salsa with as many refills as you want. The food is always great as is the service. Great prices for a lot of food.

We came to the right timing for lunch before the crowd started. The deco is very Santa Fe style and the food is very typical New Mexico where you can get comfort food smothered with green and / or red chiles and cheese. We ordered the Mexico platter, breakfast sandwiches, Huevos Rancheros and side of sopapillas( fried bread). They were greasy-spoon brunch and hit the spot! I was a little bit disappointed about the sopapillas because they didn't turn out the brownish color which was supposed to be. The size of them are bigger than my hand and then I ate it with honey. The service was great and waitstaff were attentive and friendly . Overall, it was good experience and we will be back!

Los Amigos! My friends! Los Amigos, you will always be my friend. First, you are thriving on Rodeo, where all the box stores haunt you just up the road. But Los Amigos, you keep it real. I don't mean to brag, but when I came here, I was literally the only gringo in the place. Okay I do mean to brag. I'm not saying that Los Amigos is *authentic* or anything, but it's damn good. I ordered my usual: Negra Modelo and a plate of chile rellenos, Christmas. The food came out near as quick as the beer, which tells all of us that it's just sitting in big ol pots simmering all evening waiting to be heated up. If that grosses you out, you have never cooked food before. The rellenos weren't amazing, but they were decent. What WAS amazing were the chiles. The green chiles were good, above average. The RED CHILES WERE HOT HOT HOT and flavorful and delicious! Go here for the red chiles! Also, be warned. The sopapillas here are bigger than YOUR HAND. If you don't believe me, by the beard of Zeus I curse you. Go to Los Amigos.

Just don't understand why there aren't more reviews on the place. Food is great, and reasonably priced. We always have the burrito Christmas, either chicken or carne adovado. You can get two different sizes in the burrito, so if you aren't a big eater, try the smaller size. Great pinto beans and rice accompany the burrito. These are not refried beans, bur whole. You ask nice, they might put some of the red or green on the beans. The rice has a very good flavor, not too spicey, but compliments the burrito. Also get a sopapilla. These are the biggest I've seen, flaky, hot, tasty, and waiting for all the honey. You can get by here for under $10 person. They have a liquor license, so if you want a margarita, it's available. Nice small place, but ample seating, a small patio on the back, but it is right on Rodeo even though there is a fence.

I recently went to a couple of the highest rated mexican restaurants around in Santa Fe, and got to try a majority of their food. Carne advova- The taste portions and tenderness is excellent. Definitely recommend this here Chips - average chips, free Sopapilla- this sopapilla is the best I've had in Santa fe. We ordered it on the side after everything was done and it came out crispy and huge Ribeye Steak- Quite good, original taste, no need for steak sauce or anything. Very tender Portions: Good sized, decent pricing Recommend this place over the others: cheaper prices, great sopapilla, free chips, above average everything

Cozy atmosphere, friendly service, good food. Casual environment. They have good daily specials from time to time. I get the impression that this is a family owned business.

Mmm delish! So, if you are a hungry bunny order the chicken fried steak with cream or brown gravy, 2 fried eggs on top and sides. You can order refritos instead of ranchero beans and they are good. Lovely local restaurant - great service - great food !

This place was really crowded on a weekend so be prepared to wait. The food was good and the service was fast.

From the parking lot, there were 3-doors. The first was an obvious non-entrance with boxes piled by the door, the second was not so easy to tell and since it was locked, I kept trying. On the third try, I finally got in. Nice comfortable restaurant, though not fancy (vinyl table clothes and banquet stacking chairs). Tastefully decorated and friendly and attentive service. Big food and good prices. I got the veggie sausage burrito and it was good and filling! Will surely go again.

i have to admit, this is maybe my favorite green chile so far they have a really nice little beer garden and excellent service. ive only had the tacos, and they were above average... the menu is really big, i will be back and keep yelp posted.

He says: First, don't let the three star review say that I don't like the place. They make some very tasty food. However... some issues. Some other reviews and sources have listed los Amigos as a place with some spicy food. Neither the salsa, the green chile, or the green chile quesadilla had much heat to them at all. Tapatio flavored Doritos are packing more heat than these. With that said, the flavor balance is excellent. The green chile flavor was great, the guacamole was some of the best I've had, and the quesadilla was buttery deliciousness. Unfortunately though, the tipping point between 3 and 4 was charging me $1.60 for getting a side of jalapenos without giving me any warning. A buck-fifty to chop up a ten cent pepper? Thanks, guys. She says: Green chile was really something else -- highly recommended -- forget adding beans or beef to it; just enjoy it in its full rich, warm glory. The quesadilla tasted a little too buttery for my taste; not my favorite, and I don't recommend. Service was mixed. One of the servers was very attentive and kind; the other was also pretty nice but seemed to forget a couple of questions we asked -- and possibly our existence -- within a few minutes of our arrival. Wi-fi (which we normally wouldn't use in this type of setting but needed for road trip) was out of order. Atmosphere was casual, friendly, and warm.

Awesome Food and Service! What we liked most about the service is every one of the servers helped out the next.....they were exemplary team players and they seemed to having a good time doing it....and they were busy. Food was as good as the service. I had the steak over stacked enchiladas and both were cooked to perfection. And who doesn't love getting sopapillas with your meal. We saved them for our dessert. The green chili stew was also great....with just the right amount of heat. On Sundays from 4pm to 8pm they offer a 15% discount for Seniors! NICE!

Los Amigos has a quaint atmosphere & a super friendly staff, but their chili simply does not light my fire...it's not spicy enough. Maybe they're trying to tone it down for the tourists...or maybe they gave me a tourist's version since I'm an Anglo? The young lady who took my $ was so darn sweet, but I'm looking for hot enchiladas!

  • Vin M.

The service was very nice and friendly. The prices aren't bad but when the food is bad then the value doesn't mean anything. I'm surprised this place got so many good reviews. Unfortunately my food wasn't good. I've had better hospital food. It reminded me of school cafeteria food. First my very nice waitress brought me chips and salsa. The chips were generic bag chips that were a bit stale. The salsa had the texture of apple sauce and pretty boring. I had the tacos. Taco Bell tacos are better. The taco shells were prepackaged, generic, cheap and seemed stale to me. The chicken in the tacos tasted like canned chicken. The beans and rice were not good. They need a better cook and better quality food.

In every new place it's important to identify a good Mex takeout place near our home. Last night we decided it was time to embark on our journey so I picked up two items from here: Quesadilla- $8 Tamale Plate $8.50 - Pork tamales with green chile. When I called I explained that I wanted something that wouldn't be soggy by the time I got it home and they kindly offered to put the sauces on the side. I also explained that I don't eat meat and they suggested the quesa. (OH NO, I thought, cheese is always the suggestion when I say I'm veg. ) Happy to report that they know what they're doing with their quesas! The quesadilla was AWESOME- real government cheese, mildly spicy roasted chiles (the kind that creep up on you) and lots of sour cream, tomatoes, and guac. Total bargain for $8. Hubby reports that his tamales were very tasty, spiced just right, and filling with sides of pinto beans and rice. I asked if he'd go back and he said YES definitely, especially if they make good Margs. When I went to pick up our food I was pleasantly surprised at how cosy the inside of this unassuming restaurant was and look forward to dining here soon. Good find, great price, very nice service.

Breakfast, lunch or dinner, it's a good place to go. The service is top notch and every thing I've tried from the menu is tasty, cooked to order and a pleasure to eat. I especially like their green chili stew. The "weekends only" menudo is some of the best around, tender and tasty with just enough red chili and posole. The atmosphere is pleasant and everything is clean and neat. They have some useful options on the very diverse menu. If you seem occasionally challenged by extra large portions they will bring you less. Red or green or Christmas are also mentioned. A very nice change of pace from the other two good local places and well worth it.

Very, very good. This is one of my favorite places to eat when I'm in Santa Fe. I have loved everything that I've ever eaten here. I tend to stay with green chile, rather than red chile, and their green chile is amazing.

I have not been impressed with this place my last few trips here. There are several other Northern NM restaurants with better service and food. It's not the worst place to eat, but it's not the best by far.

Good new mexican food at a good price. I hit this place about once every two weeks. I love their combo platter relleno, taco, tamale and an enchilada, way too much food but it is good. Breakfast is solid as well. Entree portions are good to a bit large, desert portions are insanely large. Avoid the margaritas they are made from Agave wine and are not a real margarita.

I have to admit that I ate here once before and wasn't too impressed, but I was talked into going here again today and I'm now a fan. First off, Los Amigos has better service than when they first opened, so that is good. Second, they have free wireless, so I could connect to the internet after asking for the WiFi key. Third, the food serving I got was massive! I ordered the breakfast sandwich; eggs, potatoes, green chile, and bacon enfolded in a tortilla. I was expecting about half the food that I received, and it was impressive. I'm looking at the leftovers now. What a great deal! Another plus is that Los Amigos serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner at all hours of the day! I'm a huge breakfast fan, and I'm constantly griping when a local restaurant doesn't serve breakfast after 11:00... Since I rarely am awake before noon, this has caused problems with me in the past. I also like the daily specials that they had posted. I'm going to go back there often!

Los Amigos is by far my favorite New Mexican restaurant in Santa Fe. The food is consistently delicious, the service is sweet and attentive, and the ambiance is homey and welcoming. My boyfriend and I eat in or get take-out from here whenever we're craving some local comfort food. The Tres Amigos enchilada plate and the veggie sausage breakfast burrito are two of my favorites. Try both their red and their green chile. Both are great. Highly recommend it.

Outstanding place. I know this place is owned by the same people as the Pantry and Flying Tortilla, and I'd probably not come here for breakfast (I enjoy the ambience of the other two restaurants), this place is perfect for a quick lunch or dinner. The green chile is outstanding here and I had it on my cheese enchs. Superb. The rice could use some work, though, as do most of the restaurants here in Santa Fe. My partner had menudo and she said it's one of the best she's tasted in Santa Fe. She grew up eating menudo so that's pretty meaningful. The sopapillas were fantastic too- perfectly fried and soft. Mmm! Wish they would improve their selection of beer, though.

Had the Tres Amigos Enchiladas with green chile - delicious. I'm not a New Mexican food expert but I found it delicious and reasonably priced. The one down side is it's a bit of a drive from the Plaza, but worth it. I got it to go but the service was good as far as I could tell.

before this location housed Los Amigos it was home to Castro's. i loved being able to go right down the street and grab a bowl of red chile with pasole and ground beef (pretty much my own concoction since they don't sell it this way off the menu, but they were always happy to oblige, as is Los Amigos). when Castro's moved and it became Los Amigos, i was skeptical. having just returned from a nice little west coast roadie, i was anxious to get a taste of home. Rudy and family didn't disappoint. craving green chile this time, we stopped & grabbed a large cup of green chile and beans with those awesome soft tortillas. my taste buds couldn't be happier! they also have great steak & cheese enchilada's, breakfast burrito's (try their new veggie sausage!) and frito pies!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
